As the election for the next Village President of Hebron, Illinois, approaches, I had the opportunity to sit down with Steven Morris, a candidate who has deep ties to the village and a clear vision for its future. (Before I became his campaign manager, I had the chance to sit down with him and discuss his ideas in depth. It was in this conversation, and others that followed, that convinced me to help work on his campaign.) One of the key issues he’s passionate about is the revitalization of Hebron’s downtown district. During our conversation, Morris shared his thoughts on how the area can thrive and become a place for everyone to enjoy.

The Potential of Hebron's Downtown
When asked about the future of the downtown district, Morris didn’t hold back on his optimism. "I think Hebron’s downtown has a lot of potential," he began. "It's got the bones to be a real hub for the community, but it needs some attention and care." His vision for downtown Hebron involves attracting new businesses to create a vibrant, bustling atmosphere. “I’d personally love to see new businesses in the area, businesses that can bring fresh energy and pump new blood into the village. It’s important to keep things dynamic and make sure we’re not stagnant.”
For Morris, it’s not just about attracting businesses—it’s about creating a space where people want to spend time. “We need a downtown that’s not only welcoming but also a place families and friends can come together and socialize. That’s something I think we’ve been missing,” he said.
A Safe, Family-Friendly Downtown
When it comes to making downtown Hebron more inviting, Morris highlighted the importance of safety and inclusivity. “One of the most important things I’d like to see is making downtown more family-friendly. We want it to be safe, warm, and welcoming for everyone—whether they’re visiting from out of town or just stopping in for lunch with the kids,” he explained.
Morris believes that creating an inclusive environment is essential for the future of the village. “It’s about ensuring that everyone feels comfortable in downtown. If we can make it a place where families can walk around, shop, and enjoy the day without worry, that’s the kind of downtown we need.”
Fair Treatment for Local Businesses
As a candidate, Morris is also focused on the fair treatment of local businesses. He expressed concern about ordinances that may make business owners feel targeted. "I think it’s critical that ordinances are applied fairly across the board. Right now, some businesses are feeling like they’re being treated unfairly, and that’s not the way to build a strong, thriving community,” Morris said. “We need to make sure our local businesses have the chance to grow and succeed, not feel like they’re under constant pressure.”
He went on to explain that a more balanced approach would benefit not only the business owners but the entire village. "If we can make sure everyone is held to the same standards, it will allow for a much healthier environment where businesses can thrive, and the community can prosper."
A Vision for a Beautiful, Timeless Downtown

Morris also envisions a downtown district that is not only functional but aesthetically pleasing. "I want to see the downtown area look less like a flea market and more like something you’d see in a Norman Rockwell painting—something charming, timeless, and appealing,” he said with a smile. “Something that’s not just about having a few stores but a place that makes you feel at home the minute you step in."
He referenced the kind of beauty often associated with traditional American towns, such as those seen in vintage Sears catalogs. "It’s that classic, welcoming, small-town feel that draws people in and makes them want to stay. That’s the kind of downtown I envision for Hebron."
Steve Morris’s vision for the downtown district of Hebron is one that blends progress with tradition. He believes in its potential to become a thriving, safe, and family-friendly hub, one that welcomes everyone and showcases the village’s unique charm. Reflecting on the successes of neighboring communities like Harvard and Richmond, which revitalized their downtowns with thoughtful investments, Morris believes Hebron is primed for similar transformation. “Harvard and Richmond have shown us what’s possible when you blend progress with tradition,” Morris said. “It’s about creating a space that locals love and visitors can’t wait to explore. That’s the downtown I see for Hebron.” As the election draws near, it’s clear that Morris is committed to creating a downtown that both residents and visitors can be proud of—a place that captures the heart of the community and looks to the future with optimism.
