Hebron, IL – A political meet and greet hosted by Village President candidate Steven Morris on February 22 at Hazel’s Diner saw a turnout of over two dozen residents eager to discuss the future of Hebron. The event provided a platform for Morris and his supporters to share their vision for revitalizing the town and addressing key concerns.

One of the central topics of discussion was the plan for the downtown district, with an emphasis on revitalization efforts to attract new businesses and improve infrastructure. "Hebron has so much potential," Morris said.
"We need to breathe life back into our downtown and create a space where businesses can thrive and our community can gather."
Morris also highlighted the importance of reestablishing the town’s Planning and Zoning Committee, which has been inactive. This committee would oversee development projects, ensuring proper regulations are followed.
"A strong Planning and Zoning Committee will allow us to move forward with projects efficiently and responsibly," he stated.
A major initiative proposed was hiring in-house building inspectors to reduce third-party expenses, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars. These inspectors would operate under the Planning and Zoning Committee’s oversight to streamline operations and improve efficiency.
"Why should we pay outsiders when we can have our own team ensuring everything is up to code? It’s about accountability and cost savings," Morris explained.
Public safety was another critical focus, with Morris addressing the need to revamp the Hebron Police Department. He emphasized the importance of appointing an interim police chief and reassigning leadership to enhance accountability.
"We need a police department that serves and protects with integrity. Leadership changes are necessary to restore trust," he said.
"We don’t need a police chief who will drive onto the sidewalk, endangering our children, just to act like he’s doing something." The event also featured a surprise guest appearance by Hebron’s former Community Service Officer (CSO), who shared his insights on the department’s challenges and the need for reform.
Morris did not shy away from addressing past administrative failures, including those under previous leadership, such as Frank Beaty’s tenure. High water bills, which have burdened residents for years, were also discussed, with Morris advocating for solutions to alleviate costs.
"Our residents shouldn't have to break the bank just to have running water. We will find a way to bring these costs down," he promised.
Additionally, the long-stalled Kennedy home project, which has remained in legal limbo for over 15 years, was cited as an example of poor management that must be rectified.
To ensure transparency and accountability within village operations, Morris proposed mandatory background checks for all village employees. He pledged to be the first to undergo the process as a demonstration of his commitment to honesty and integrity.
"No one is above accountability—not even me," Morris affirmed.
Another key initiative introduced was the Responsible Bidder Ordinance (RBO), which would ensure that the village only contracts with reputable businesses that have no criminal background. This measure aims to prevent fraud and protect taxpayer money.
"We need to make sure that every dollar spent is going to a responsible, trustworthy contractor," Morris asserted.
Morris also emphasized the importance of securing grants to fund community improvements. By applying for state and federal grants, the town could gain access to additional resources to enhance public services, infrastructure, and economic development.
"We need an administration that’s willing to submit 100 grant applications just to secure one, because that one grant could change the future of our community. It’s worth the effort, and we won’t stop until we get the funding Hebron deserves," he stated.
To further promote transparency, Morris proposed independent audits across all village departments. These audits would provide a clear financial picture and ensure taxpayer dollars are being used responsibly. "We owe it to the people of Hebron to show them exactly where their money is going," Morris said.
The event successfully engaged residents and allowed them to voice concerns while learning about Morris’s plans to address Hebron’s ongoing challenges. With a strong focus on revitalization, transparency, and fiscal responsibility, Morris aims to lead Hebron into a new era of progress and accountability.
